A guide to travelling well.
Whilst this guide has a focus on those who write, I think anyone with a curious eye can take a hint or two from this guide!
10 Ways to see a place like a storyteller………..
1….. Arrive slowly…..
Before reaching for your phone or guidebook, pause and notice first impressions.
Light, sound, temperature, the rhythm of movement. First sensory reactions are often the most honest.
2……Follow the ordinary….
Tourist landmarks rarely reveal character.
Commuters, shopkeepers, schoolchildren, and everyday routines often tell you more about a place than monuments do.
3…...Listen for language, not just meaning
Even if you don’t understand the words, notice cadence, volume and gesture.
How people speak shapes atmosphere as much as architecture.
4…..Notice what repeats
Colours, materials, smells, sounds, tiled floors, citrus trees, church bells. traffic hum.
Repetition creates a places identity.
5....Look up and down…..
Writers(and those with a curious eye) often miss what lies outside eye level.
Balconies, wires, roof lines above, worn thresholds, pavement markings and shadows below.
6….Ask yourself what feels different.
What social rules seem unfamiliar? How do people queue, greet one another, eat or move through public space? Difference is a narrative energy.
7….Pay attention to the weather…..
Light and climate shape behaviour. Heat slows movement, rain alters mood, wind changes sound.
The weather is never just a background.
8……Write one moment, not everything…
Instead of describing an entire city, capture a single scene: a cafe table, a ferry crossing, a market stall at closing time. Specificity creates authenticity.
9…Record contradictions….
Places are rarely one thing. Beauty may sit beside decay, tranquilly beside tension, these contrasts give writing depth.
10…. Write before you understand….
Don’t wait until the trip is over. Write while impressions are still incomplete; uncertainty often produces the most vivid observations.

With thanks to my “Writing” magazine.
Enjoy whatever you are creating this week!
