With thanks again to Dwayne Walker, I love his thoughts on creativity.
The image above is from my children’s short story, The Fiddler. You can find it on Waterstones.com, just type in my name Pauline Dawber.
| “Most people think juggling is about throwing.
But it’s not… It’s about timing the fall. Every ball you toss is already coming down. The juggler’s job isn’t to keep things in the air forever. It’s to know which ball is falling next. That’s it. Most creatives think growth is a ladder. Beginner. Intermediate. Master. Legend. But creativity doesn’t move in a straight line. It’s more like juggling. It moves in cycles. And every cycle casts a shadow. The first is the Cycle of Curiosity. This is when everything is electric. You’re not trying to be good. You’re just trying to see. You try watercolor. Then oil. Then spoken word. Then filmmaking. Then jazz piano. You are alive. This phase is wide. It is childlike. It is reckless. It is playful. But curiosity has a shadow… The curious creative falls victim to chasing every spark. So they rarely stay long enough to build muscle. They fall in love quickly. They quit quickly. They confuse exploration with avoidance. They say “I’m multi-passionate.” But secretly they are afraid to commit. Because commitment means being seen. And being seen means being judged. Curiosity without discipline can easily become distraction. So that brings the second cycle. The Cycle of Mastery. This is when you pick something. Choosing excellence through repetition. This is craft. This is flow. You study anatomy. You learn color theory. You shoot 10,000 photos. You rewrite 30 drafts. You make 100 bad videos to make 1 good one. Mastery is narrowing in. It builds strength. It builds identity. It builds reputation. But even mastery has a dark shadow… The master eventually starts protecting their precious system. And that system becomes their prison. They found what works. And so now as they repeat it… Their style hardens. Their process becomes their norm. Their voice becomes predictable. And eventually, they stop experimenting because experimentation threatens their excellence. But that brings us to the third cycle. The Cycle of Meaning. This is when (eventually) something shifts. You start asking: Why am I making this? What is this for? Who does this serve? What is the cost of my silence? This is the phase of philosophy. Of soul. Of legacy. You’re not trying to impress anymore. You’re trying to express. This cycle is deep. It’s reflective. Existential. Sacred. And yet, meaning still has a shadow… Because depth can become heavy. You overthink. You over-contextualize. You zoom out so far you hesitate simply making. You feel like your work must matter in the grand scheme of things so much that you don’t finish it from all the pressure. Meaning without play suffocating. So what do you do in a craft when every cycle has a dark side? The greats I studied never “graduate” from one to another. Instead, they cycle… Curiosity gives you life. Mastery gives you power. Meaning gives you direction. But none of them are safe places to live forever. And so when they get too rigid, they become beginners again. When they get scattered, they commit. When they get paralyzed, they make something small. They move between width, strength, and depth. Their curiosity feeds their mastery. Mastery protects meaning. And their meaning guides curiosity. It’s a living triangle. Not a ladder. These phases are not chronological. You can be all of them at once. And so instead of trying to level up, Try to locate yourself in the middle of this juggling act. Know which ball is in the air right now and needs your focus. If it’s scattered… choose one thing and go deep. If it’s rigid…break your own rule. If paralysed…make something pointless on purpose. Growth isn’t up. It’s rhythmic.” Dwayne Walker ………………………………………………………. Enjoy whatever you are creating this week.
